Hmm, this looks to me like a terrycloth monster; a similar species to the blanket monster that exists in many homes, which seems to share space concurrently with feline residents.
P.S. My human says for me to give you a paws up on the house hunting! She bought her first house in 1996 and everything you have been going through sounds ever so familiar!

Sparkle, this definitely is the blanket monster in our house. Toonces loves to do this. Nacho, not so much.
